Smith Center, originally uploaded by Aaslestad.

This building was originally constructed as the Eakleton Hotel in 1895. It has been rehabilitated for use as acommunity art and history center: home of the Augusta County Historical Society, the Historic Staunton Foundation, and the Staunton Augusta Art Center – and a great gallery space. On of my favorite features in this building is the covered light well that extends down through the building’s center, bringing natural light into nearly all of the rooms which, of course, were originally guest rooms. It has a compressed, urban feel like an alley in Naples. You almost expect to see laundry strung across from one side to the other. It cant be seen in this photo.
